Dr. Shana Oates
Assistant Teaching Professor
Bio
Dr. Oates's research centers on issues of equity, access and inclusion in higher education for students on the autism spectrum and critically interrogates systemic and institutional forms of oppression impacting students with disabilities. Her dissertation titled, "A Spectrum of Support: A Case Study Examining Autistic Students' Experiences in Higher Education," centered the voices of autistic college students and their experiences within higher education. Her pedagogy is grounded in (re)conceptualizing disability in education and challenging the ways colleges and universities contribute to academic ableism.
Prior to earning her Ph.D., Dr. Oates worked in a variety of student affairs functional areas including academic advising, student activities, new student orientation, and, high school to college transition programs.
Dr. Oates earned a Ph.D. in Student Affairs in Higher Education from Miami University (OH) and a M.Ed. in Educational Administration from the University of Missouri.
