What is Public Health?

Public health promotes and protects the health of people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play. While doctors treat illness and injury once they occur, those in the public health field are invested in preventing people from getting sick. We focus on promoting wellness through healthy behaviors, tracking disease outbreaks, creating laws and policies that benefit the health of the population, and investigating and decreasing health disparities.

What Will I Learn?

As a public health student, you will engage in a wide array of classes to help deepen your understanding of community and population health. This includes: community health and personal wellness, epidemiology and communicable disease, health administration and health policy, social and behavioral sciences.

Faculty Feature: USM Mentored Investigator Award

Dr. Susan Mayfield-Johnson is the USM Mentored Investigator with the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research in Obesity at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Her research assesses the effectiveness of a Community Health Worker model on the continued care and management of cardiovascular disease among patients at federally qualified health centers and community health centers in the Mississippi Delta.
