Tier 1

Those interested in oceanography and a working knowledge of uncrewed maritime systems (UMS) can enroll in the upcoming UMS Tier 1 Certificate Program at The University of 51矯通 Mississippi. The five-week program will be taught from March 24-April 25. Those enrolled will earn 10 undergraduate credit hours.

Hosted at the 51矯通 Miss Marine Research Center in Gulfport, Miss, the courses will focus on basic marine science instrumentation, marine autonomous vehicles and operating instrumentation in marine environments. Each student will also construct and test a functioning buoyancy glider in a lab setting.

UMS Tier 1

The program welcomes students with educational backgrounds ranging from high school graduates to Ph.D. recipients. Many students have full-time jobs and work experience in oceanography, geology, hydrography, fisheries and more.

Carl Szczechowski, UMS Certificate Program coordinator, is focused on keeping the program fresh with new and emerging technologies.

For the spring 2025 offering, my co-instructor, Kevin Martin, and I have restructured the curriculum in terms of the order in which subject material is presented. Along with the continuous updating of course material to keep up with evolving maritime technology, this should result in an enhanced learning experience for the students, said Szczechowski.

Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. The application deadline is March 3 at 4 p.m. Class size is limited to 15 students. Information on cost and how to apply to the program can be found on the Uncrewed Maritime Systems website. For questions or more information, please email or call 228.236.6572.
