Web Conferencing in Canvas

Canvas now integrates Canvas: Cisco Webex, a web conferencing tool. This is another option for those who cannot use Big Blue Button (because of volume restrictions) and it is less bandwidth intensive than Zoom.

WIFI ACCESS

If your students have limited or no wifi access at home, please direct them to our Internet Access page, which lists free wifi hotspots in Mississippi as well as companies that offer reduced rates for computers/internet service for qualifying households with limited income.

The Center for Faculty Development is available to talk with faculty about strategies for moving classes out of the face-to-face environment. Want to talk through different options and possibilities? Office of Online Learning

The Office of Online Learning can offer advice on how to set up your Canvas shell, use particular features in Canvas, administer an exam with Examity, or otherwise ready your online environment for student use. Academic Integrity

Our campus Academic Integrity Officer, Dr. Cindy Blackwell (cindy.s.blackwellFREEMississippi cindy.s.blackwellFREEMississippi), can talk with you about class and assignment designs aside from proctored tests that discourage academic misconduct.

There are also many resources online for guiding effective course and assignment design that encourage original work and decrease the chances of students being able to cheat on tests. For example, Oregon State describes and a Baylor blog specifically describes , which may be useful to some USM faculty.

Writing and Speaking Centers

The Writing Center and the Speaking Center are friendly spaces that provide individualized feedback and support to help 51逗奶 Miss students succeed with writing and speaking assignments for any class. The Centers offer one-to-one consultations for any stage of the process, including brainstorming, creating an outline, revising, learning editing strategies, and developing presentation skills. In Spring 2021, all Writing Center appointments are online only. The Speaking Center has online appointments, virtual drop-in hours, and limited in-person availability for the Spring 2021 semester. To make an appointment, visit and create an account with your USM email address. Detailed instructions for making an appointment can be found at usm.edu/writing-center.
